The “size” refers to the size of the prongs themselves. Larger sizes are not necessarily appropriate for larger dogs. Longer prongs are intended for very thick coated dogs (Malamutes, Samoyeds, Akitas, etc.). Do not buy a large prong size for a short-haired or lightly coated dog. The smaller the prong, the better the fit. Additional prongs can be added in to ensure a proper, comfortable fit.

A properly fitted prong collar should fit snug, but not tight, at the top of your dog’s neck (behind the ears, not down near their shoulders). The prongs should rest against the skin while not digging into your dog’s neck. The collar should be comfortable, but never loose. Proper prong size and fit are critically important to these collars working properly! If you have a short- or silky-coated dog, I find that adding vinyl tips helps keep the collar from sliding down.

LOCAL:
Peppo’s Pets, Hoffman Estates

ONLINE:
Herm Sprenger Stainless Steel Prong Collar
Herm Sprenger Extra Prongs
Vinyl Comfort Tips

Herm Sprenger Prong Collar with Buckle

For folks who may struggle with low dexterity or fine motor ability, or just want an easier to use collar, these collars are Herm Sprengers with a buckle added onto the front, making your prong collar easier to put on and take off. I generally recommend the 2.25mm for most dogs, and 1.5mm for small breeds. Please see the above info under “Herm Sprenger Prong Collars” for more info on sizing.

Buckled Prong Collars

Electronic & Remote Collars

Deciding between the FieldTrainer and YardTrainer is a matter of what you want long-term from your e-collar. The FieldTrainer is expandable to up to three dogs per remote, while the YardTrainer is not. The YardTrainer is very suitable for most dog owners, and has the option of a 100 yard or 300 yard range. All models are waterproof and rechargeable. The only model that does not offer vibration correction is the YardTrainer 100. Unless we have discussed it prior, please be careful to NOT order any of the “S” models. The “S” stands for “stubborn” and these collars deliver a much higher level correction than the standard models. These are not necessary for most dogs, no matter how bullheaded you think your dog is!

SportDog – YardTrainer
SportDog – FieldTrainer

Muzzles

The only muzzle I have never been bitten through is Jafco, and I’m excited to be able to bring these excellent, lightweight, dog-centric muzzles to my clients directly, no middle man.
